The timing issue: That's if the implementation of the cypher introduces measurable variations in delays between the data blocks in the cyphered data stream that give a clue to the key. I can't put it more concisely than that paper's abstract. Note that it says *difficult*, not *impossible* to give constant timings on a *general-purpose-computer*. But I find the paper's wording that this constitutes a fault in the AES *design* to be somewhat questionable.
I just can't believe the 13th Warrior cost that much! What the hell did they spend it on? There are barely any major special effects scenes, a few big battle scenes but nothing by the standards of movies like Troy, and Antonio Banderas ain't ever been worth that much. Man, I liked that movie, but it definitely wasn't worth $200 million. Someone was running a grift.
